The situation

Idle games look trivial and are not. Progress accrues while the application is closed, which means the game has to reconstruct hours of simulated time from a timestamp without letting a player move their device clock forward and skip a week.

The economy is the other half. A curve that feels generous in the first hour is usually broken by day ten, and a curve tuned for day ten is unbearable in the first hour.

What we did

Bob Wood Idle is our own mobile title, built in React Native. The interesting engineering is offline progression calculation and an economy tuned so that the early game and the long tail both hold up.

Why a game

Games are an unusually strict test of the things business software gets to be sloppy about: frame budgets, state restoration, and an audience that will find and exploit every arithmetic mistake within a day.

It is also genuinely good practice at store releases, in-app economies and retention — all of which transfer directly to client mobile work.
